With Apple targeting OLEDs, demand for mini-LEDs is expected to decline. An Apple supplier of mini-LED displays says that the demand for the latter type of screens is expected to decrease in some sectors (consumer market) but to grow in others.
With the recession in sight, Apple puts more pressure on suppliers
Apple has apparently decided to use OLED technology for various future products, and the Taiwanese site DigiTimes reports that the demand for mini-LED displays is forecast for 2023 declining in the consumer electronics sector, and increasing in areas such as dashboards and vehicle displays.
The Macrumors website recalls that a rumor circulated last week according to which Samsung is giving priority to the development of a specific type of OLED display that Apple intends to use in future iPad Pros. According to the rumors in question, Apple intends to introduce an iPad Pro with an OLED display in 2024, an indiscretion that would have led mini-LED display manufacturers to begin evaluating other potential markets.
In addition to the iPad Pro, Apple is planning a MacBook Air with an OLED display in 2024. In Cupertino they would be considering the possible use of OLEDs also for a new iPhone SE, but the company would be undecided whether to use OLED or LCD to reduce costs.
