Apple is continuing to develop its custom modem chip, but it won’t make it in time for integration on the iPhone 15. The company’s goal is to replace Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 5G chips in the coming years.
Today’s report claims that TSMC will be the main supplier of the Qualcomm 5G chip to be used in the iPhone 15 series, leveraging the 5nm and 4nm process.
The iPhone 14 series includes the Snapdragon X65 modem, which has improved 5G speed and battery life over the previous model. The iPhone 15 is expected to feature the more advanced X70 chip, which features AI capabilities for faster average speeds, improved coverage, better signal quality, lower latency, and up to 60% power efficiency.
Other leakers had said that Apple would be ready as early as 2023 with its first 5G modem chip, but apparently it will take a few more years. With this component, the company will have almost total control over the most important hardware of the iPhones, namely processor (already developed internally for years) and modem chip.
All this means even more optimization, to the benefit of performance and battery.
