One of the common complaints in recent years is that it is increasingly difficult to hear the dialogue well in series and films, with the voices of the characters buried behind the noise of sound effects and background music present in modern productions.
One of the minor changes in tvOS 17 is a dialogue audio enhancement option to help mitigate these cases, available to Apple TV 4K users with paired HomePod speaker setups.
This feature is unique to Apple TV 4K with home theater audio mode using HomePod (2nd generation) speakers. It is not available for the HomePod or the first generation HomePod mini (probably because the single speaker setup cannot optimally render different output channels).
The feature is also only available with apps that use the standard system video player, and is activated via the Sound menu above the progress bar, with the Enhance Dialogue option next to the long-standing Reduce Loud Sounds option.
Apple says that enabling the Enhance Dialogue option analyzes playback audio and separates actors’ speech from effects and background music, “pushing dialogue into the center channel.”
