Tencent ditches the metaverse as Apple focuses on mixed virtual reality. It is rumored that Apple intends to present its AR / VR viewer at the WWDC in June (annual conference dedicated to developers).

The metaverse is referred to by some observers as a revolution; for still others it is already a flop, despite the fact that Mark Zuckerberg (the CEO of Meta) continues to believe in it, investing billions with ongoing experiments that so far do not seem to give the desired results.
Will Apple do better or will it follow a completely different vision2? We don’t know but in the meantime Tencent, the Chinese giant that deals with entertainment services, has decided to dismantle the hardware division that was supposed to deal with the metaverse, a phenomenon that has not materialized and an area in which Tencent has decided that it is not worth the worth investing.
To underline Tencent’s renunciation for metaverse and related hardware, Reuters explains that the Chinese company had “ambitious plans” but that the strategy followed so far was at a loss and forecasts indicated the possible return only from 2027 onwards.
An unspecified source reports that Tencent would have suggested to various staff members who dealt with Metaverse and Virtual Reality to “look for other opportunities and, although nothing was officially communicated, the company would therefore have decided to definitively abandon its idea of metaverse.
Mark Gurman of Bloomberg and others are convinced that Apple will dive headlong into mixed Virtual Reality with its headset and site PatentlyApple – taking into account various patents filed by Apple in the past – hypothesizes that in Cupertino they have a different idea of metaverse (term that the CEO, Tim Cook, does not like), hypothesizing possible new experiences that would allow, for example, to work on files, photos and documents, in the same way as one would in front of a Mac, with an overall user experience superior to those possible with only the computer and which would justify the high price of the Apple viewer (about $ 3000). We’ll just have to wait and see what Apple has in store.
According to analyst Ming Chi Kuo, the first headset will offer computing power comparable to the latest Apple Silicon Macs, thanks to two Apple-designed chips, one to handle the headset’s high-resolution graphics, which looks like up to two 8K screens, the second chip instead dedicated to the management of the numerous sensors and integrated cameras. Due to the very high performance components and sensors used this will be a professional device with a high price.
