This was reported by Strategy Analytics, an analysis company according to which 14 million smartphones were sold in the annual 6.18 online shopping festival, the mid-year party (6/18, from 1st to 18th June) which sees many companies offering discounts and promotions; the numbers of the shopping festival 6/18 are down by 25% compared to those recorded last year; well-known Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo have all experienced a substantial drop in shipments but Apple’s iPhone sales remain relatively stable.
Apple – Macrumors writes – showed better performance than rival companies, selling about 7 million iPhones during the festival, and the company is ranked first in terms of revenues from all major e-commerce platforms. “Apple has consolidated its leadership at the expense of Chinese companies,” reports the company specializing in industry analysis.
The market in China reflects the global trend: according to a recent report by Canalys, global smartphone shipments in the second quarter fell by 9% year on year, and Apple managed to capture 17% market share, up 3% year on year; Samsung also managed to increase its market share for the same entity while Chinese vendors such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo saw their market share drop by 14%, 10% and 9% respectively.
The data highlights a “surprisingly resilient” demand for the iPhone 13 in China, despite various problems related to supply chains, and headwinds on the global economy that are being felt across the industry. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes demand for the iPhone 14 in China will also be high, allowing Apple to maintain momentum, particularly now that Huawei has exited the market for top-of-the-line 5G phones, which is dominated by Apple.
Recall that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro line is expected to bring a number of updates to the iPhone, including camera improvements, changes to the front camera cutout and Apple’s latest A16 processor.
