Reality One, Reality Pro: potential names for Apple’s mixed reality headset. After years of waiting and multiple delays, the announcement of Apple’s mixed reality headset seems closer and closer. New trademarks were secretly filed earlier this year to prepare the ground before launch.

Apple is reportedly starting to pitch potential names for its future mixed reality headset. American media reported on August 28 that it had found three trademarks registered in the United States, European Union and several other countries: Reality One, Reality Pro and Reality Processor.
A USUAL PROCESS
Apple is not the direct originator of these deposits. It would have used front companies (“Immersive Health Solutions”, created in February by “Corporation Trust”) to hide the maneuver, a common practice to try to keep the surprise before the announcement. This is cheaper than having to pay after the fact to buy a brand from another company, as was the case for “iPhone” (bought from Cisco).
Earlier this year, the “realityOS” trademark was also registered in this way. Apple’s previous trademarks, which went through the same process with similar intermediaries, add to the credibility of the information. Obviously, there is no guarantee that Apple will use these specific names for the product, but these filings indicate that the company is getting closer to launching its long-awaited first product in this category.
A HIGH-END HELMET
It will be a headset capable of both virtual reality and augmented reality through passthrough, which should be able to work on its own but will require connection to another device to take full advantage of its capabilities. It would retail for around $3,000 and would be aimed primarily at Apple developers and fans to lay the groundwork for future consumer glasses that are lighter and less bulky.
Reality One and Reality Pro could refer to model options for the device, with Apple using the Pro suffix for its high-end products (Macbook Pro, iPad Pro). Reality Processor would correspond to the chip developed specifically for the occasion based on the SoC M2, while realityOS would be the operating system, a variant of iOS, developed for the specific needs of the headset. Apple’s framework for augmented reality on the iPhone is already called RealityKit.
Apple envisions that these may one day (during the 2030s) replace the iPhone. The headset was originally supposed to be announced in June at the WWDC 2022 conference, but saw its release delayed due to overheating issues and camera and software issues. Following these setbacks, it may not be available until 2023.
FRONTAL COMPETITION AGAINST META
This product will directly oppose Meta’s Cambria project, which is scheduled for release in October and will probably be called Quest Pro. Apple will be able to count on the power of its ecosystem and the loyalty of its users to quickly find a place alongside the current market leader. She will be helped by the financial setbacks of Meta, which she partially caused herself.
