Not all iPhones will have the battery percentage always visible. After the release of iOS 16, Apple confirmed that older-generation iPhones will not have the ability to show the battery percentage directly in the status bar.

In an updated support document a few hours ago, Apple says the new battery percentage view is not available on the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12 mini, and iPhone 13 mini. Apple has not provided further information on why these devices will not be able to take advantage of the new feature.
Apple added the battery percentage display icon in one of the iOS 16 betas. The new toggle, located under Settings> Battery, allows users to always see the battery percentage directly in the status bar without having to scroll down to activate the Control Center.
Ever since the iPhone X (the first Apple smartphone with the notch), users have asked the company to make it easier to view the battery level directly in the status bar. However, Appleās recent implementation has not been appreciated by everyone.
In fact, the new icon includes the percentage of the battery inside the icon itself instead of on the left. The white battery icon therefore remains completely full until the battery reaches 20% or less, at which point one fifth of the icon turns red and the rest of the icon becomes translucent.
