iPhone with MicroLED display in Apple’s roadmap. Apple intends to make future iPhones using MicroLED displays, a technology that boasts better efficiency, brightness, contrast and other benefits compared to LCDs and for various peculiarities also compared to OLEDs.
iOS 17, Maps lock screen would look like Apple Music
This was reported by the Taiwanese DigiTimes, stating that the first Apple product to take advantage of MicroLED technology should be the Apple Watch Ultra, followed by the iPhone and iPad. The rumor of Apple Watch with MicroLED is not entirely new and similar rumors had already circulated in March of this year.
“Starting with Apple Watch, Apple plans to take advantage of additional microLED displays on iPhone and iPad,” writes DigiTimes. “Some IT industry sources predict that the Apple Watch Ultra will no longer use current OLED displays in late 2024 or 2025 and that they will be replaced by Apple-developed microLED displays.”
According to analyst Jeff Pu, for the Apple Watch Ultra with microLED Apple is working on a 2.1″ display (larger than today’s 1.9″ model) the technology in question would make it possible to obtain brightness levels comparable to those of current Apple Watches with OLED displays.
It will still be some time before we see a product with this type of display and if this type of panel could arrive on the Apple Watch Ultra in 2024 or 2025, for the iPhone we will talk about it even further. As for the iPhone 15, which we should see shortly before the end of the year, the entire lineup in question is expected with an OLED display.
The Macrumors website points out that Apple is in the meantime completing the transition to OLEDs: the first product with an OLED display was the Apple Watch, followed by the iPhone X; according to rumors, the first iPads and Macs with OLED are expected next year. The transition to MicroLED technology will likely follow a similar trajectory.
