iPhone 15 with proximity sensor in the dynamic island to improve Face ID. With the launch of the iPhone 15 this fall, Apple is expected to bring Dynamic Island to its entire range of devices. In conjunction with this move, the company is also planning to move the proximity sensor of the iPhone within the dynamic island.
Kuo reveals the news for AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods USB-C
The main purpose of the proximity sensor is to turn off the screen when a user holds the phone to their ear. It also plays a role in optimizing the Always-On display of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was the first to report on this possible change. According to Kuo, the iPhone 15’s proximity sensor “will be located within the dynamic island.” This change will reportedly have no impact on the Dynamic Island area itself.
Currently, the proximity sensor of the iPhone 14 Pro is located under the display of the iPhone, outside of the island:
While all iPhone 15 models adopt a similar Dynamic Island design to the iPhone 14 Pro, the difference lies in the positioning of the proximity sensor. In the iPhone 14 Pro, the proximity sensor is located under the display (outside the dynamic island). Conversely, in the iPhone 15 series, the proximity sensor is located within the dynamic island, basically with no change in the dynamic island area
Leaker Unknownz21 on Twitter confirmed this change, reporting that the change will apply to both the standard iPhone 15 series and the iPhone 15 Pro line. The codename of the component is “Sphinx” and is part of the “Single Pearl module”. Pearl is Apple’s name for Face ID.
Additionally, Kuo adds that Apple supplier Finisar will supply the company with 940n wavelength proximity sensors specifically for the iPhone 15, as opposed to the current 1380nm proximity sensors used in the iPhone 14 Pro.
