iPadOS 16.1: New Features and Devices
Over the years, major iPadOS updates have been released at the same time as major iOS updates. This year, however, Apple delayed iPadOS 16 to October but still released iOS 16 in September as originally scheduled. That means iPadOS 16.1 released next week will be the first iPadOS 16 version to be released to users.
Apple will use the name “iPadOS 16.1” when it is released rather than iPadOS 16 perhaps because to sync with iOS 16.1 is also expected to be released at the same time.
iPadOS 16 includes a number of changes to the iPad experience, most notably the new Stage Manager multitasking feature. This feature brings a whole new windowed multitasking system to iPad. Users can create many different interfaces with different sized windows for many applications, and then easily switch between those interfaces.
When it was first announced, Apple said Stage Manager would only be available on iPads with the M1 chip, including the iPad Air and iPad Pro. However, a few weeks ago, they “turned the car around” and confirmed that additional support for iPad Pro models from 2018 and 2020 will also be able to use Stage Manager.
In a future iPadOS 16 release, Stage Manager will also add support for output to an external display for iPad. However, this feature will be limited to the iPad Pro M1 (and now the M2) models.
Other new features in iPadOS 16:
- Messages app update: can edit, undo sending, mark as unread for iMessages messages.
- Mail app update: can undo send, rich link, scheduled send, etc.
- Screen zoom: just like iPhone, you can now choose the right zoom level to show more or less information on the screen.
- The Weather App on iPad
- Brand new Home App
- “Desktop-Class Apps” with customizable toolbars, new context menus, find and replace, select multiple context menus, and more.
iPadOS 16.1 will be released on October 24. Users of iPad Pro, iPad Air 3 and later, iPad 5 and later, and iPad mini 5 and later can all get the update.
