How to block blue screen iPhone and other tips to sleep better? Did you know that blue light from a smartphone screen negatively affects sleep? While blue light has received a lot of attention and everyone is advised to avoid it before falling asleep, there are also studies showing that it’s not just blue light that can have a negative impact on falling asleep. This article has collected recommendations on how to block blue light on iPhone and other ways to improve sleep.
Update to macOS Ventura 13.2.1 available
Blue screen light has become one of the most frequently discussed issues related to poor sleep quality. However, recent research and advice from Dr. Huberman, professor of neuroscience and ophthalmology at Stanford University School of Medicine, showed that other types of light can also interfere with sleep.
Below, we’ll look at four ways you can use your iPhone more purposefully to help you fall asleep more easily.
How to turn off blue light on iPhone and other ways to fall asleep?
The best way to sleep
Avoid bright artificial light of any color before bed
- Dr. Huberman suggests removing any artificial light sources immediately after sunset.
- Others recommend avoiding blue/bright light an hour before bed.
- If you can’t completely turn off your iPhone, be sure to turn down the brightness or try one of the following.
Grayscale on your iPhone
- Adjust your iPhone’s grayscale screen to reduce the harmful effects of your smartphone in the evening.
- Say “Hey Siri, turn on grayscale” or (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Color Filters > Grayscale).
- You can also say “Hey Siri, turn down the brightness” (Control Center > adjust the brightness with the slider with the sun icon)
- Unfortunately, iOS doesn’t have the ability to schedule automatic greyscale like Android does.
Block blue light on iPhone
If you just want to block blue light on your iPhone at night, you can use a color filter:
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Light Filters.
- Activate the Light Filters switch, then select Hue > move the Intensity slider all the way to the right and the Hue all the way to the left for red, which will eliminate the blue light.
- As with grayscale, using a red filter makes the iPhone less attractive to use at night.
- For a quick activation of this mode, you can set the activation by triple tapping the back of the iPhone. To do this, go to Accessibility settings > Tap > Back panel tap > Triple/Double tap and in the Accessibility section select Color Filters. Now, when you triple or double tap on your iPhone, a gray or red filter will be activated.
Night Shift / dark mode
Night Shift is an iPhone option that automatically shifts the colors of your display “to a warmer color spectrum.” While this may help your display appear less bright and inviting, it is still artificial light with colors that can interfere with your ability to fall asleep.
Dark mode is another way to make your display less attractive, and therefore less harmful to your eyesight. These screen adjustment methods are suitable for you if you do not want to turn on filters.
- To enable and configure Night Shift, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift.
- To set up dark mode, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Light/Dark > Automatic to enable automatic switching between light and dark modes.
