Gurman reveals all the news that will be presented by Apple at WWDC 2023. Between iOS 17, watchOS 10 and new devices, here are all the news that will be presented by Apple on June 5 according to Mark Gurman.
Apple’s first major event for 2023 will be WWDC which will begin on June 5, which this year could offer us not only new software, but also many new products.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman lists which hardware innovations will be unveiled on June 5.
WWDC news
According to Gurman, who we remember is among the most reliable leakers when it comes to future Apple products, the company will present these innovations at WWDC 2023:
- Apple’s first AR / VR viewer, which barring surprises will be called Reality Pro
- xrOS, the operating system that will run on the headset
- iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14 and watchOS 10
- New MacBooks
Apple Reality Pro headset
Not surprisingly, Gurman still expects Apple’s mixed reality headsets to be the big stars of the event. According to him, the reason why the Cupertino company wants to unveil the Reality Pros at WWDC is to guarantee developers a sufficient amount of time to create software and apps that the viewer will be able to exploit before its expected official debut in fall.
New Macs
Gurman’s words confirm that there will be a long delay between the presentation and the release of the first generation headset. Other than Reality Pro, the only other hardware announcement is for the Mac range, as Gurman isn’t expecting any new iPads in June either.
Apple is working on a 15-inch MacBook Air, an updated 13-inch MacBook Air and a new 13-inch MacBook Pro, and at least some of these new laptops will be announced at WWDC in June, according to Mark Gurman.
In his newsletter today, Gurman said the new MacBooks arriving at WWDC likely won’t feature Apple’s M3 chip and instead be powered by processors “in line with” the M2 chip. This information suggests that the 15-inch MacBook Air will be powered by the M2 chip, but it’s not entirely clear what that means for the 13-inch MacBook Air and next-generation 13-inch MacBook Pro, as these models already come with the chip. M2.
In addition, Apple plans to release at least two new Mac Studio models, but they are unlikely to be presented as early as June. In his newsletter today, Gurman also touched briefly on the Mac Studio, with two new models on the way whose timeline is still unclear. The reporter did not share further details about the new models, so for now the technical specifications and release times remain unknown.
Apple released the Mac Studio and Studio Display in March 2022. The high-end desktop computer is available with Apple’s M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips. The high-end Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip is currently the fastest Mac ever released.
watchOS 10
Finally, also according to Gurman, most software updates will likely be incremental with no major new features, with the exception of watchOS 10, which could be “the biggest Apple Watch software update since the first version was introduced in 2015.”
watchOS 10 will therefore be the biggest update ever seen in the history of Apple Watches, with tons of improvements and a completely updated interface. The reporter did not provide further details.
Gurman went on to add that minimal hardware changes are expected for upcoming Apple Watch models, so watchOS 10 will be the big news in the lineup for 2023.
iOS 17 and iPadOS 17
As mentioned before, according to Gurman Apple will not introduce many features in iOS 17, but will insert elements to allow the loading of apps from alternative stores.
In the case of iOS and iPadOS, Gurman writes that they are unlikely to offer major new features, but there will be minor improvements including some user-requested features.
The most important novelty will therefore be the possibility of having alternative app stores on iPhone and iPad, with Apple forced to do so due to the new European standards. It is not clear whether this novelty will be limited only to the market in Europe or will still arrive all over the world.
Finally, Gurman adds that iPadOS 17 will apparently “lay the groundwork” for future iPad Pro models that will use OLED displays, without providing further details.
