Apple works on a Mac monitor that can display miscellaneous information when it’s on standby. In the latest issue of his “Power On” newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a Mac monitor that can double as a smart home display when it’s not in use as the primary display for the Mac.
New agreement between Apple and Nokia
Gurman reports that Apple is also working on monitors that are expected to be sold in the future in place of the current Pro Display XDR and Apple Studio Display.
As regards the smart display functionality, the idea is to exploit the chip of an iOS device (e.g. the A13 which is already in the Display Studio), in the same way as what already happens with the automatic framing of the video camera and spatial audio.
The ability to take advantage of the display when it is not in use (e.g. with the Mac off), activating a sort of “Energy Saving” mode, recalls the “Suspend” mode of iOS 17, a novelty that on the iPhone informs the user at a glance designed to be visible from a distance when the iPhone is on the side and charging (ideal when the iPhone is resting on a night stand, on the countertop or in the kitchen), customizing the elements to see, choosing between always visible clock styles, favorite photos, widgets and more.
Gurman does not indicate when the new monitors should arrive but merely refers generically to next year at best.
