Apple will allow in-app payment methods to be updated. It will soon be easier to switch payment methods if you have billing issues on the App Store.
Apple tested iPhone 15 with Lightning port
Apple is making a major change to in-app subscriptions on iPhone and iPad regarding billing issues.
Starting this summer, you’ll be able to resolve billing issues directly in-app if a subscription renewal fails. Previously, you had to handle subscription payment errors through your Apple ID settings.
Apple announced the news on its developer website. The company says that if an auto-renewing subscription doesn’t renew due to a billing issue, customers will see a prompt directly in that app to update their payment method.
The pop-up message is provided by the system and will prompt users to update the payment method for their Apple ID. This change simplifies the process for both customers and developers and should result in a reduction in expired subscriptions.
Apple says there’s nothing developers will need to do to adopt this feature, because it’s part of the StoreKit framework with iOS 16.4 and iPadOS 16.4.
Here’s how it works:
It will soon be easier than ever for your customers to resolve payment issues, so they can stay subscribed to your premium content, services, and features. Starting this summer, if an auto-renewing subscription doesn’t renew due to a billing issue, a system-provided pop-up will appear in your app with a message allowing customers to update their payment method for the own Apple ID.
No action is required to adopt this feature. Starting today, you can familiarize yourself with the feature in the Sandbox. This feature will require at least iOS 16.4 or iPadOS 16.4.
Developers can read more on Apple’s website and start testing the feature using Sandbox. The novelty will be launched for users this summer.
