Apple Watch will connect to more iPhones, iPads and Macs. According to a leaker, Apple is working on new software updates that will allow users to connect their Apple Watch with different Apple devices, such as iPhones, iPads and Macs.
iPadOS 17 will bring the customizable lock screen to iPad
Currently, an Apple Watch can only be paired with one iPhone, and while multiple Apple Watch models can be paired with the same iPhone, there is no reverse functionality for syncing or pairing an Apple Watch with other Apple devices.
Even if the sync and primary link only apply between an iPhone and an Apple Watch, there are already functions that take advantage of the wearable in combination with other Apple devices. In fact, once an Apple Watch has been paired with an iPhone, it can be used together with an iPad connected to the same Apple ID to follow Apple Fitness+ training programs on the iPad screen.
Additionally, Mac users can use their Apple Watch to unlock their computer, authenticate applications, view passwords, and authorize online Apple Pay transactions, but the exceptions end there.
However, it appears that these limitations may soon be overcome. According to leaker @analyst941, Apple is planning to change the pairing – syncing process so that an Apple Watch is no longer tied to just one iPhone, but can instead be synced across multiple iPhone, iPad and Mac devices.
The leaker admitted he doesn’t know how this process will be implemented, but syncing via iCloud could be a possibility, similar to how AirPods work across multiple devices. It’s unclear whether an iPhone will still be needed to set up an Apple Watch before syncing it with other Apple devices signed in to the same iCloud account.
Furthermore, it is not known whether this change will arrive already this year with watchOS 10, iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS 14, arriving at WWDC23, or if it will be delayed to 2024.
