A decade ago, choosing an iPad was straightforward, with just two main models differing mainly in size and older models offered at discounts. However, over time, Apple has expanded the lineup to include various iterations: the base model, iPad mini, iPad Air, and iPad Pros, each with their own unique features and target audiences.
One notable example of this complexity is the iPad Air, which with its 10.9″ display, closely resembles a Pro model but differs in key areas like chip performance, offering an M1 chip compared to the M2 in the Pro variants. This overlap in features has contributed to consumer confusion in distinguishing between the models.
The compatibility with different generations of the Apple Pencil further complicates the selection process. Some iPads work with the first-generation pencil, while others are compatible with the second-generation and USB-C versions. Additionally, connectivity options vary across the range, with the more affordable models equipped with Lightning connectors, while others have moved to USB-C.
Apple’s motivation for simplifying its iPad lineup also stems from the need to provide a cost-effective option for the education market. This could potentially lead to the discontinuation of certain intermediate models, making the product line more straightforward and accessible.

Looking ahead, Gurman anticipates updates to the Mac Studio and Mac Pro lines, which are expected to incorporate M3 chips as well. However, these updates are projected for release towards the end of 2024 or early 2025.
In the meantime, Apple is preparing its Apple Store staff for the launch of the Vision Pro, a device that Gurman expects will be available by March. This upcoming product is part of Apple’s continuous efforts to expand its product portfolio.
Furthermore, Gurman has recently speculated about the release of new Apple accessories, including the Magic Keyboard, iMagic Mouse, and Magic Trackpad, all featuring USB-C connectors.
