According to Mark Gurman, Apple has created a division within the company to manage Vision Pro and other parts of the ecosystem to be developed in the future.
This division is called the Vision Products Group, or VPG, which is a new nomenclature for the group. It has actually existed since 2015 as the Technology Development Group or TDG and was rebranded recently to reflect what the group will be running over the next few years.
Gurman explains that Vision Products Group is a self-contained division within Apple, adding some interesting insights. For example, Steve Jobs did away with the usual divisional product development structure, and this group is a departure from the way he ran Apple.
Suffice it to say that Apple does not have dedicated divisions to develop iPhones or iPads, but instead has larger teams that manage different parts of the development for all products. However, with the Vision Products Group, things are different.
The group is independent of Apple’s core hardware and software engineering and other departments. It has its own versions of those teams, which report to Rockwell, as well as those for strategy, computer vision, content, app development, and project management.
However, the division is still connected to the rest of Apple and will work in tandem with other segments of the company:
It works with the design and operations teams overseen by Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, and the chip unit led by Johny Srouji that makes M2 and R1 processors. It also builds on frameworks and other building blocks created for iOS and macOS by Federighi’s group, which is also responsible for some of the headset’s development tools. And he gets a helping hand from the main hardware organization.
The group was apparently supposed to be disbanded and integrated into other divisions of the company by the time Vision Pro launched, but Apple seems to have chosen to keep it going.
