Apple is reportedly planning a major refresh to the iPad Pro next year. A new report from Bloomberg provides new information on what to expect from the new iPad Pro, including new displays with OLED technology, and a revised Magic Keyboard to go with it.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the new iPad Pro models will be “the first major product update since 2018.” As he explains, the iPad Pro has gone through a number of small changes since the new design language was introduced, which is still used today, but the overall product has remained the same. According to Gurman, the new iPad Pro range will consist of two models, one with an 11-inch screen and one with a 13-inch screen.
These screens will also switch to OLED technology. Currently, the 12.9-inch version uses mini-LED technology for its screen, while the 11-inch model uses LED backlight technology. Gurman says this means the new iPad Pro models will offer “sharper, brighter screens and reproduce colors more accurately.” On the specific side, however, the new iPad Pro models will include future M3 chips. The devices, currently in testing by Apple, use model identifiers J717, J718, J720 and J721. The M3 chip is expected to debut for the first time later this year with new Mac updates, but this revamped version of the iPad Pro isn’t expected until next year.
Is there a new Magic Keyboard coming soon?
Gurman’s report doesn’t stop there, because he also talks about the new Magic Keyboard. The Magic Keyboard was first introduced for the iPad in 2020 and has remained the same ever since. The revised version of the Magic Keyboard will make the iPad dedicated to professionals “even more of a laptop than the current configuration”. One of the changes will presumably concern the presence of a larger trackpad, which will make it even more similar to the one found in MacBooks.
As for the release date, Bloomberg says the new iPad Pro models won’t debut until “spring or early summer” next year, and no updates to the devices are expected until then.
