This article has collected everything that is currently known about the operating system for the Apple mixed reality headset – realityOS. This guide will be updated as new information about realityOS becomes available.

rOS

Since 2017, Apple has been working on the software that will run the AR/VR headset, and according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s new operating system will be called realityOS or rOS. The name will overlap with the glasses, which are expected to be called Reality One or Reality Pro.

realityOS is internally codenamed “Oak”, references to it have been found in App Store magazines and Apple’s source code confirming this name.

What rOS will be able to do?

Apple sees the headset as a device for gaming, watching video content, video conferencing, and interacting with other people, and that’s what Apple is focusing on in terms of software. Gurman described the headset as “an all-encompassing 3D environment” designed for gaming, media consumption, and communication.

Face time

FaceTime will be an essential communication application for rOS, incorporating existing features such as SharePlay and Memoji/Animoji. With SharePlay, headset owners will be able to watch TV shows and movies together and use Memoji and Animoji as virtual avatars. Headset cameras will likely detect facial expressions and work like Animoji and Memoji on iPhone and iPad.

Messages

In addition to FaceTime, core apps like Messages will be available on the AR/VR glasses, although it’s currently unknown how the Messages app will work. Rumor has it that Apple is building a brand new version of Messenger with chats, support for video clips, a home view and more.

Cards

The mixed reality glasses will have a Maps app available, but there are no details yet on what it will include. It may include some Look Around features and iconic Apple features to allow users to explore cities around the world.

Games

Gaming is a key feature on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, and the AR/VR headset is expected to support gaming as well. For example, Apple Arcade can be supplemented with AR/VR games for mixed reality glasses.

App Store

Mac, iPhone, Apple TV, and Apple Watch have their own sections in the App Store for installing apps, and the AR/VR headset is also expected to get its own App Store.

Streaming services

Based on the hiring, Apple is developing a glasses video service that will include 3D content that can be played in virtual reality. Apple may also partner with third-party services to create content that can be viewed in VR.

rOS release date

Since the AR/VR headset is due out in 2023, probably in the first half of the year, we expect to see the first version of realityOS. It’s possible Apple could unveil realityOS and the headset at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June, but there’s also a chance it could come out sooner.
